Foods Which Helps Colon Health

A healthy colon or large intestine is not only important for a digestive system that works smoothly but it is also helpful in preventing colon cancer. The main function of the colon is to absorb water from the stool. It also absorbs sodium and releases potassium. All of these are important in the digestive process. Here are the best foods for colon health.

Whole Grains
Whole grains like brown rice, whole grain bread and cereal are high in fiber but low in fat. Fiber helps clean up the colon and get rid of digestive waste and other toxic substances that can cause digestive problems from gas to colon cancer. Whole grain foods also provide essential nutrients for a healthy colon like protein, iron, magnesium and certain B vitamins.

Green and Orange Vegetables
Vegetables in general are good for colon health. They contain a high amount of fiber while at the same time are also high in essential nutrients. These foods also fill you up quickly so there is a tendency that you will be consuming less food which helps you maintain a healthy weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to minimize colon cancer risk.
Fruits
Whole fruits are high in fiber but they also contain essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. It is best to consume at least a serving of fruit with every meal. Certain fruits also taste great and can satisfy your sweet tooth. This is a lot better compared to other sweet foods like cakes and pastries. Certain fruits like raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are high in antioxidants which can help prevent digestive diseases like colon cancer.

Probiotics
The average diet is high in refined carbohydrates and low in fiber. This significantly reduces the number of friendly bacteria in the intestines which upsets the intestinal ecosystem of the body. Probiotics like miso, yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut can replenish the number of friendly bacteria in the body which prevents digestive-related problems like gas, constipation, etc.

White Tea
A research conducted in the University of North Carolina found that one cup of tea a day can reduce risk of colon cancer by half. It is high in antioxidants that prevent the growth of cancer cells. Another study from Oregon State University found that white tea is very effective in blocking the growth of colon polyps. In fact, it is more effective compared to green tea according to the study.

Water
The majority of people don’t drink enough water. It is the universal solvent and insufficient intake of water can lead to constipation and other health problems. The suggested amount of water intake is at least 8 glasses daily but this should increase if you sweat more due to exercise, the weather or a fever.
