REFLECTION


Many of you may be in the process of reflection, but truly it is something that should be done on a daily basis, and not only when the New Year rolls around.  The word itself screams to take a look at me/you/us and speaking personally, I include all areas of my life and not just my physical well-being.  I imagine a big mirror in front of me and gazing into that, I ask myself…am I happy with the person that I am physically, emotionally and spiritually? If any of the answers come up as a big negative, it is time to implement a change to create a better, healthier ME.  It is hard to deny the things that need fixing when I am staring back at me waiting for the action to make that happen.  Of course, I can close my eyes, put the mirror away, brush things under the rug, and procrastinate and get to it later…or not, and well, just continue to live in denial. 






I am a mover and a shaker, and strive to change, progress, and become a better me today than I was yesterday and that takes a choice.  Sure, I could avoid those things that need to be done, because maybe I want to hold onto some sort of drama, negative feelings about the past, or circumstance and continue to play the “blame card” of this is the reason I am the way I am.  I have learned in this journey of life, that this type of thinking results in a life of unhappiness, bitterness, resentment, jealousy, and paralyzes the brain to make appropriate healthy life choices.  Honestly, this type of thinking creates a person that is not a joy to be around unless the company being kept is another negative person also playing the victim card of life.  It is so important in our life reflection to also look at the type of people we associate with, and I always ask myself…does this relationship nourish my soul and grow me in a positive way as a person?



Reflection is huge in the scheme of life and change for the healthy.  It should cause deep thought into living our passions, being real with who we are, and having the ability to share that with ourselves and others.  There is too much hiding behind the crap of excuses, circumstances, and laziness to change and I apologize if that sounds offensive, as my intention is to motivate and never discourage.  Sometimes, a draft of really cold air needs to slap us in the face and wake us up to the reality of what is going on in our own life, and hopefully that leads to taking a step further to change what needs to be changed.  Otherwise, we continue to go along living a “fake” life, hiding behind “out of our control” drama, negativity, and looking for validation for unhealthy habits.  What is even sadder, is enablement of this type of lifestyle…YES, there are those who feed into the ugliness of negative and validate the behavior which enables someone caught in this shit storm to continue living this way. 


Reflection also causes us to see our physical self in a way that makes us happy or not.  What it comes down to is me/you/us and the mirror, standing naked before the reflection and staring back at the image, we need to ask “do I LOVE what I see”.  It is important to always love yourself at every level of health and as long as steps are being taken to become a healthier us each day.  If the answer to the question is “no”, then what steps need to be implemented to change this?  Be honest here and strive for the happiness that you want, the health that you need and deserve.  If you tell me that you are happy in an unhealthy state and if I shared that with you…how would that make sense?  The point I am trying to make, is that we all have our best healthy-self hidden inside what may be an unhealthy body today, but that does not mean that tomorrow needs to remain the same.   Reflection requires that hard honest look and further to take the actions necessary to bring about changes that move us in a progressive healthy direction. 


Reflection is not a fad or temporary fix, but part of the process to make a LIFESTYLE change and create a healthy body that will be maintained for life. Reflection causes us to get into our “mental game” and start putting the puzzle pieces together of what is wrong and how does it get fixed.  It all starts with what is going on between the ears, and once the reflection is honestly accepted, and the feelings that go with that, then changes can begin to create a healthier person, and then that lifestyle change will create a reflection that we will be happy to know for a lifetime.

Reconnect with Friends

Healthy relationships can go a long way to help you manage or even eliminate stress. Not only can they be great sounding boards, they can help you find solutions for what's stressing you. They can also provide a much-needed positive aspect to a life marred by stress.

Get a Hobby

Hobbies are great stress-relievers, because they allow you to pour your stress into something productive that you enjoy doing. This can take your mind off of what ails you, increase your confidence and provide a lift to any day in which you participate in it.

Have Some Fun

It won't kill you to get out there and live a little. You just might find that by adding a little fun into the rotation, that old enemy stress has less time to bother you.

Someone Else's Stress

A good thing to remember is not to take on someone else's stress, because it doesn't help either one of you. If a friend or family member has issues of their own, help them to determine how to alleviate their woes without making them yours as well.

Out of Your Hands

Some stressors are just out of your control. Learn how to differentiate between things you can change and thing you can't. You cannot dwell on the things that are out of your hands, as hard as that is to understand.

Dramatic Changes

Sometimes you might find yourself at crossroads, where you need to make a dramatic change for yourself. If your job is too much to deal with, or whatever the case might be, it might be time to take a new path that keeps you from being bogged down with stress. If you can manage, it might be worth taking the time to figure things out before jumping into anything.

Redirection

Channel your stress into something that makes you work harder for what you are aiming for. For example, you could redirect the stress to focus on your job and earn an upcoming promotion you've been eying.

Many people wonder why potassium is so important. The fact
is that your body would suffer terribly if you were to ever
have a deficiency. The first to suffer would be your heart,
it simply cannot function without it. A lack of potassium
would damage your cellular process and make you feel really
weak. Try not to ever get to the point of a potassium
shortage.

With the importance of potassium out of the way, lets get
down to how best to increase your intake.

1. Nuts and seeds have very high concentration of potassium
so eat as much nuts as you can, that should give you a good
dose to last you for the day.

2. If eating nuts is an issue then your next best bet would
be to eat a bowl of cereal which is high in potassium such
as bran flakes. While it might not seem palatable it does
work.

3. Eat some muesli and you won't have to eat the nuts or
seeds and you can definitely avoid the bran flakes.

4. Between breakfast and/or lunch, have a handful of dried
fruits
. They are very high in potassium.

5. You can also mix dried fruits into a food of your choice
such as a salad where something sweet wont be noticed too
much.

6. Do you like raisins? If you do that's great news as they
are very high in potassium content and could be another
source.

7. Do you like baked potatoes? Then you're in luck, they are
very high in potassium content and a single baked potato
will go a long way in terms of your daily intake. This does
not mean that you should be mixing it with anything else like
sour cream or cheese etc. Just the baked potato.

8. This might taste a bit unusual but the Cuban delicacy of
boiled plantains is a great source of potassium.

9. Whole wheat pasta and tomatoes are another great source
of potassium.

10. If you like sardines then that's yet another option.

No Time To Exercise? Try 10-Minute Exercise Bursts

The recommended amount of exercise determined by fitness
gurus and physicians is 30 minutes to 1 hour per day. This
may be more than you have time for, especially if your job
is demanding or you have children.

Identify New Opportunities

Exercising is always possible provided you just squeeze it
into your schedules in a more resourceful manner. Get off
your couch and start moving around, advises fitness guru Ann
Grandjean. Every bit of chore inside your house is an
opportunity to get fit. The trick is to get yourself moving
- clear out the attic, do some gardening, walk to the
grocery store. Any activity that expends energy also burns
up calories.

Don't Waste Your Mini-breaks on Coffee

If you are thinking that short spurts of exercise wouldn't
affect your fitness level, you're in for a surprise. One
recent study showed that participants who spread out their
exercise throughout the day into 10-minute blocks are
disposed to exercise regularly, and shed more pounds in 5
months, compared to most women who'd rather work out
straight for an hour.

What the Professionals Have to Say

In Virginia, exercise physiologist Glenn Gaesser recently
conducted a study in which subjects exercised for 10 minutes
at a time. He determined that 15 sets of 10-minute workouts
caused those who did them to essentially turn back time.
Participants who followed this regimen were rewarded after
one month when Gaesser found that their levels of fitness
matched those of men and women 20 years their junior.

Splitting exercise into smaller blocks during your busy days
can build your confidence, says time management consultant
Harold Taylor. Missing out on regular gym sessions shoots
down your momentum and motivation. You may surmise that
fitness training isn't worth pursuing anymore because you
just don't have the time for it. However, if you can manage
to squeeze in some exercise opportunity any way you find it,
however small it is, it somehow encourages you to hang in
there and stay on.

Not a Replacement

Remember, however, that short exercise blocks are intended
to make use of available free time; it should not take the
place of your existing fitness program. Here are some
practical tips to squeeze exercise in your daily routine
even if you "don't have the time." Don't tackle all of them
in one day; simply choose the ones that work for you.

* When you pick up the morning paper, take a quick 5-minute
walk up the street and back again.

* If you're stuck at home to care for a sick child, work on
the exercise bike or Stair walker while your "patient" is
asleep.

* Set aside a few minutes to do jumping jacks. You can burn
90 calories in just 10 minutes this way.

* Do a few sets of upright push-ups while standing at the
kitchen counter. This works your arms and shoulders.

* Go outside and shoot some baskets or play tag with your
children after dinner.

* Take a moment to do a few dumbbell exercises before going
to bed each night. Sheila Cluff, a professional exercise
instructor at The Palms in Palm Springs, CA, leaves a set of
dumbbells in her bathroom.

* Join your kid at baseball or football practice and walk
laps around the field.

What Your Healthy Whole Body & a Well-Tuned Car Have In Common

It's a common occurrence for us to use our body in order to
identify ourselves. We use labels such as tall, short, thin,
muscular, curvy, healthy, and unhealthy and so on. There are
very few people who are able to take that step outside of a
particular definition and consider our body as what it is in
reality - a blessed vehicle carrying us through times of
joy, troubles, victory and challenges.

Instead of defining it and thus letting the definition rule
the way you treat your body, because there really is more to
a body than size or shape, why not seize the opportunity to
take ultimate care of it? Treat it as the beautiful vehicle
it actually is.

There is a common metaphor often used when discussing the
human body and it just happens to be a car. Both being
vehicles we depend on to get us where we need to go,
properly taken care of they can both be counted on and
reliable in their own way.

How Do You Treat Your Car And How Do You Treat Your Body?

More often than not, many of us tend to treat our cars
better than our own bodies. Our cars get the best gas in the
tank, even if it's more expensive than regular gas.
Following this act of generosity towards our car, we proceed
to fueling our bodies with food void of any nutritional
value. We begin a ritual of washing our cars every week,
with the metaphor being a car spa but yet we rarely spend
time or money on any ritual of basic self care.

We ignore the knocks and pings the very loud signals our
body gives us when it needs something and yet the slightest
shimmy or gurgle from under the hood of our car sends us to
the auto mechanic for a diagnostic.

You might be thinking "but it's dangerous to ignore these
sounds from your car." This is true, squeaking brakes or a
grinding noise from the rear axle could cause an accident.
However, the sounds and signals your body gives you are just
as dangerous. We've all heard the horror stories about a
friend or family member who ignored the signs and then it
was too late.

Instead of continuing to follow this path, appreciate
whatever shape, form and situation your body is in. It has
taken you where you have needed to go, and so far hasn't let
you down. Embrace your healthy whole body as of right now,
because while you are much more than your body itself, you
just can't exist and experience life without it.

Think About Consider These Questions:

Your car will be unable to run or take you where you want to
go without putting in the right grade of fuel. Are you
running on empty? Using the best fuel? If you're not, begin
today to make small changes. Drink more water, replace empty
calories with nutrients. Feed your body well and it'll take
you far.

There's a blinking 'check engine' light on your dashboard,
trying to be noticed. We are talking about self care here.
Have you scheduled in some time for yourself, for checkups
and some personal down time? Taking a walk or hike with
family and friends, or a weekly date night with your
sweetheart - there are many options available for taking a
step away to enjoy the life you have been given, find the
balance to make it all happen, and first and foremost, start
paying attention to the signals your body is sending you.

It makes sense to take care of yourself in all the ways that
you know how and are able to. You can wait until your car
breaks down to get it repaired or you can choose regular
maintenance, following up right away when you notice a
rattle, a chug in the engine, wiper blades that don't clear
the windshield, any malfunction.

Last but not least, when you find the tread wearing thin on
your tires, you replace them right? Each of us needs to take
time out to evaluate the steady running of our lives, where
we are and where we want to be. It's normal for our needs to
change over time and ignoring these changing needs results
in us ignoring who we really are - and this is not good for
our health or our happiness.

So, next time you're at the gas station or washing your car
step back and remember that you wouldn't be able to do any
of those tasks if it weren't for the divine vehicle you're
residing in - your body. Take great care of it; it's the
only one you get.

Want To Enjoy Life? Get Healthy And Fit

It's difficult enough surviving in this day and age without
your health declining for one reason or another. Keeping
yourself fit and healthy will keep your immunity strong, so
your body has better natural defenses against infections and
diseases.

If you look after yourself and stay in good shape your life
will be a more positive and productive one that you will
enjoy more. Everything you achieve will be a reflection of
the way you feel. Look after your body and your body will
look after you.

Avoiding poor quality food, and eating a diet that is rich
in essential nutrients is an important part of good health.
Your immune system relies on nutrients to keep you healthy,
and keep infections away that you otherwise would get. A
healthy diet will also help keep your body strong and
mentally alert so you can do everything you need to do to
enjoy a fulfilling life.

Get a healthy balance of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats
and protein. Processed foods should be avoided as these are
full of sugar and simple carbs. While you may get an initial
energy rush from these poor quality foods they will
eventually make you feel depressed and tired.

Simple carbohydrates also make you fat, and that will
deplete your energy and make you more depressed. If you want
to add some simple carbs to your diet then get them from
fruit.

Exercising regularly also helps you stay fit and strong.
Without consuming a healthy diet you won't find the energy
to exercise as much as you need or want to. Exercise also
releases endorphins which are feel-good neurotransmitters
produced by the brain.

Your body will be toned if you exercise regularly, and
having a toned body automatically makes you feel good. You
won't ever feel good with an overweight body that feels
tired all the time. A toned body is full of energy so you
have the mental focus and strength to do more than you
need too.

Getting enough sleep gives your body chance to regenerate.
It's the quality of the sleep you get as well as the amount
of sleep you get, and if you exercise regularly you'll get a
better quality 8 hours sleep every night. This means you'll
wake up refreshed in the morning looking forward to the day
ahead because you're safe in the knowledge that you can cope
with everything you need to do.

If you live a healthy life you'll help yourself stay away
from infections and diseases. This means you'll stay away
from the immune system suppressing drugs that are prescribed
to fight these diseases and infections.

A healthier body is a happier body, and if you're happier it
will automatically make you feel healthier. This will have a
positive effect on the life of everyone around you as well
as yourself.
