4 Tips To Reclaim Your Life From Addiction

Drug and alcohol addiction is a disease that can be managed with help from a professional who understands addiction and will help you recover from it. Addiction is not a weakness or moral failure, but it does need to be taken seriously for recovery to become a priority in your life. Here are four tips to make that recovery a reality.

1. Develop a Supportive Network

Some friends will jeopardize your recovery by encouraging the addiction. New friends who encourage and support you will help the recovery process. It is important to share your struggles and challenges with family and friends. Addictions are often isolating, and you need a support system plus new coping tools to help you get through difficult days especially when you feel tempted. Recovery is a day by day process, and you may benefit from the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, a church based group or other social network in addition to the help of friends and family.

2. Get Healthy

During the recovery process, it is important to take care of yourself by eating right and exercising 30 to 60 minutes a few days a week improving both your mental and physical health. Adequate sleep will help reduce stress and give you the energy to cope with the challenges of recovery. Addictions can affect your health, and your body needs a chance to recover.

3. Embrace New Habits

It is important to avoid places of temptation like bars and clubs that expose you to alcohol and drugs. You need to change how you spend your free time. Local activities and events that stimulate your mind and body in a healthy way are a much better alternative. Addictive behavior can bring with it feelings of guilt and shame. As you make a positive contribution to society through work or a volunteer position, you will increase your feelings of self-esteem, pride and accomplishment.

4. Learning How to Cope

Even with the support of friends and family, recovery from addiction can be overwhelming. Utah rehab can make your recovery a reality whether as an outpatient or staying in their facility. Dedicated professionals will help you learn new coping skills. Family members will have the opportunity to learn about addiction and handling stress. Relationships among family members and friends may have been damaged by your addictive behaviors and require healing. You need to learn new healthy ways to relate to others and cope with stress such as journaling or meditation.

Weight loss story on Transformation Tuesday with Tiffany Moore

Have you ever been  told you were fat? Well Tiffany did and this was the pinnacle of her lifestyle change along with wanting to get her health back on track.

What I love most about Tiffany is her smile. Every picture of her shines through the screen and she's one inspirational lady. This is her story....

How old are you and please can you share your health and fitness journey to date?
I'm 43. My journey started 3 years ago. I joined an expensive gym and forced myself to go. I had list weight before through diet pills, programs like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers. Overeater a Anonymous, medical shots. You name it. This time I decided to work out and limit portion control. At the time, I thought what I ate was OK. I started seeing results and 2.5 years later I had lost 128lbs going from 284 to 156.

What types of foods did you used to eat as a kid and young adult? What's changed since then?
I ate whatever I wanted and never gained weight up until the age of 21. Fast food, fried food, soda, excessive amounts of read mealy. Tons of salty food!

Do you play any sports or what sports do you like watching?
Never played sports. Took aerobics in high school because it was popular then. I was to shy to join any teams growing up.

What are your interests, passion and what makes you smile?
I love working out, helping and inspiring others who started where I did to do the same. I like taking pictures, listening to music and shopping!

What was the catalyst that sparked your lifestyle change?
It has been a struggle for as long as I remember and although I had already started the journey, this may have helped me stick to it. I was having heart palpitations during working out. I was sent to a heart specialist who said I had blockage if an artery, my heart was enlarged from working so hard, and I needed to go on blood pressure meds ASAP. I begged him not to as I had already lost 30lbs. He said;

"You are fat. You've been fat for a very long time. You probably will always be fat. You need to take the meds and you probably won't get off them."

I cried right there on the table. I pushed myself even harder. A year later, I got off those meds and I went back to that doctor who didn't recognize me. I reminded him of that day.

What are some of your dreams/goals you hope to achieve over the next 12 months?
I want to become a trainer. I want my own gym and a fitness line. I hope to inspire people to change their fitness lives regardless of financial status, cultural background, and age.

What tips would you like to share with my readers about your transformation?
Don't give up. It's a journey with hills that only make you stronger when you go up them. Use other people as inspiration and to gain information, but do your own research as well. You only get one body. Take care of it.

Identifying and Treating Exercise Bulimia

The 21st century’s obsession with superficial “perfection” - great muscle tone and low body fat has taken a dark turn. Eating disorder bulimia nervosa is an attempt to bodily “purge” food content by vomiting or using other means to expel this food, such as using laxatives. In comparison, Exercise Bulimia takes to what appears like a healthier approach to weight loss - aggressive exercise.

Identifying Exercise Bulimia

As said, Exercise Bulimia may appear to simply be a fiercely aggressive attitude to fitness and working. Athletes and weightlifters often "overtrain" to push their potential and force their bodies to adapt to more pressure and weight. However, this is a highly regulated and monitored workout regime with specific goals, duration and prescribed rest period to allow the body to heal and therefore become stronger.

An exercise bulimic only has one goal - to burn more calories than have been consumed. It can therefore be considered "compulsive exercising".

Symptoms

Exercise Bulimia is therefore not simply about wanting to exercise regularly. An exercise bulimic will display unrest and agitation if he doesn't get to overstrain himself or herself by exercising. Patients have reported missing work, family events, and often center their entire lifestyle around exercising. Workouts are therefore often not a happy, satisfying experience, but a rigid, forced and uncompromising task.

Obviously, attitudes to food are also affected. Exercise bulimics will schedule their eating around workouts to burn off calories consumed

The Dangers of Exercise Bulimia

Its short term symptoms are also tell-tale signs that you can use to identify it. Exercise bulimics engage in grueling workouts day after day. The workout sessions are designed to have them expend more calories than consumed, and be completely worn out. In the short-term, results are manifested in physical exhaustion. Exercise bulimics will often exhibit physiological signs of muscle pains, and even injuries due to worn out muscles.

While the eating disorder bulimia nervosa is more common among women than men, exercise bulimia affects both men and women equally. As the disorder strips away body fat, regular menstruation is affected, due to "exercise amenorrhea". Amenorrhea can also lead to infertility, and cardiological risks , among other health issues.

Recovering from Exercise Bulimia

Patients view exercise as an empowering activity to "purge" the body from calories and maintain a certain body image. As they have designed a lifestyle around exercise and burning calories, it is unwise to assume that simply pointing out exercise bulimia and supplying relevant medical literature can suddenly change someone.

What is required is a gentle, caring approach that allows the bulimic to open up about his deep-rooted reasons to over-exercise. Many severe cases may even require consultation with a counselor or psychologist and a fitness expert.

A few major changes in perspectives include -
  • Viewing exercise bulimia as a means to improve health, fitness and overall well being, and not to simply burn calories.
  • Addressing deep-rooted self esteem and body issues, as well as triggers for this behavior
  • Addressing specific causes of anxiety that are indirectly fueling such behavior

Chocolate balls AKA truffles with chickpeas and no added sugar

Chocolate truffles

Typically I make these with nuts eg: 250g walnuts, hazelnuts etc... or LSA mix

But on this occasion I drained and thoroughly washed 1 can of chickpeas and added;

• 1 heaped tablespoon of raw cacao powder or good quality dark cocoa powder

( For extra protein I add 1 scoop of 180 Nutrition chocolate protein powder)
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• pinch sea salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla bean

• 1 tablespoon coconut oil
• 1/4 cup honey or more to taste or use pitted dates until you reach your desired sweetness

NB: you can always soak the pitted dates with the chickpeas so they absorb their flavour!

Method

Simply blend all ingredients together and roll into balls in desiccated coconut or cacao powder and enjoy!!!

I hope you all had an amazing week, I look forward to next week and the countdown to my first ever Ride To Conquer Cancer!!! WOO HOO!!!

Medications To Avoid When Taking High Blood Pressure Medicine

Millions of people suffer from high blood pressure, which is why it is one of the most recognized health concerns. High blood pressure is also called hypertension, and it can increase your risk of suffering from health problems like heart disease and stroke.

When you are diagnosed with high blood pressure your doctor will give you certain orders to change your daily routine, exercise more, watch what you eat, and take certain OTC products. The over the counter medications you are prescribed are sometimes safe, but some can make your blood pressure worse.

When you have high blood pressure it is definitely important to read the labels on any over the counter medication you're taking, especially if your blood pressure is more than 120/80 mmHg. Take a look below at the kind of over the counter medications you should avoid taking when you have high blood pressure.

Cold Medicines

When you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure you should use caution when taking common cold medications like decongestants. Decongestants work to help your cold by narrowing the blood vessels within your nose and sinuses.

However, when you have high blood pressure it may make your condition worse by narrowing blood vessels in other places in your body. If you are taking over the counter medications for your high blood pressure some ingredients that can be found in cold medicines like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine will interrupt your treatment.

Over The Counter Medications with High Sodium Content

Taking over the counter medications that have a high level of sodium can have adverse side effects when pared with your prescribed blood pressure medications. The high sodium content will make your blood pressure worse by making your body keep in water.

Before you take any OTC medicine make sure it doesn't have ingredients in it that are labeled soda or sodium. If you are taking a certain medication that has a high level of sodium look for a similar version that has a sodium level that's lower. If you have high blood pressure some over the counter medications will have more sodium than your daily allowance so you have to be-careful.

What Foods Should You Avoid

Along with the certain medications you should avoid taking, you should also watch the type of foods you eat. There are some foods that will reduce your high blood pressure and some that will make it worse. If you have high blood pressure or if you’re at risk of developing it you should remove the following food items from your diet.

Soda

Drinking less soda is important if you are suffering from high blood pressure due to sugar content of these beverages. Even drinks like sweet tea can increase the rate of your high blood pressure. Instead of drinking sodas look for more unsweetened drinks like water or natural fruit juices that don't have any sugar added.

Alcohol

Another beverage to remove from your diet includes alcohol. If you really have to consume alcohol it is important to keep it to a minimum to avoid increasing your hypertension.

Coffee

Just like alcohol, and beverages with excessive sugar, coffee can make your high blood pressure worse. Instead of consuming caffeinated beverages everyday replace them with a healthier choice like herbal tea or green tea.

Processed Meats

As mentioned earlier, high levels of sodium is your enemy if you have high blood pressure, and processed foods are extremely salty. Avoid processed meats like sausage, bacon, and hot dogs which will make your hypertension condition worse due to their high sodium content. Replace processed meats in your diet with lower sodium alternatives like chicken breast, turkey breast, and lean beef.

MADE IN THE GYM, MAINTAINED IN THE KITCHEN

It does not matter how much I exercise, if I do not put healthy foods in my body, I will not be healthy.  It is really that simple.  Outside of my workouts, I maintain my body mostly with healthy food intake.  An hour of exercise at least five days per week is sufficient for me, and allows for great recovery and rest for my body.  How I feed my body is the maintenance work that takes place all day long, until I hit the sheets for sleep.  Even then, it is important to eat healthy food that promotes sleep as well.

Yes, I build my body in the gym and prior to that ensure that my body is ready to go with the proper fuel to get me through my workout.  I purposely create a space on my client calendar where I am the client for a workout.  I give myself one hour of bodywork time and that is enough.  If my hunger bell rings just before my scheduled time, I will slam an apple or a few pieces of watermelon, and if over the top hunger hits, there is no way I am missing what my body is telling me…GO EAT.  It happens sometimes and I will not allow my metabolism to be thrown out of whack over one workout.   Most of the time though, a small piece of fruit and water will allow me to push forward and I fuel directly after my workout.  I have become quite the strategic eater and workout gal with my career as a personal trainer and coach.

The maintenance work is always on call and important for a healthy body.  Like I shared earlier, there is no amount of exercise that will create a healthy body without the healthy food.  Some get caught up in a vicious exercise punishment cycle of I got to work that “shit” off or starvation mode the following day.  That creates a negative thought process about working out instead of looking at it as a gift for the body.  Before any backlash, I need to clarify that exercise is great and important for the body even if unhealthy food is being eaten, so please do not think I am saying not to exercise if your nutrition is not dialed in yet. The human body was made to be active and move, not remain stagnant and sedentary for hours on end.  So any steps taken to create a healthy body with exercise are POSITIVE steps. I understand that beginning and adapting a healthy lifestyle can be a struggle in the food department and if exercise is the first thing on the agenda to incorporate…that is great.

What I am saying, and I will use my personal life as an example, is that my body is at its’ healthy best when I am simultaneously eating healthy and exercising consistently.  It is a LIFESTYLE of building and maintaining that has been fine tuned over the years.  It does take years to develop muscle, maintain that muscle and fuel the body in ways to keep that muscle.  Without healthy food and not eating, I would lose all the hard work made in the gym, and that is just not going to happen, besides…I LOVE to eat!

My main maintenance foods consist of lean proteins, antioxidants, healthy fats, and fiber.  Examples would be boneless skinless chicken breast, lean ground turkey, eggs, yogurt, nuts, seeds, oats, all types of greens and vegetables along with fresh fruits, and healthy oils.  I prefer to purchase all my healthy food products organic, humanely and sustainably raised, and non-GMO (genetically modified organism).  If I am on track at least 90% of the time with my healthy food intake for maintenance, I feel pretty good enjoying my occasional treats.  I do not deny myself if I want to enjoy a cookie, brownie, pie, frozen yogurt, etc. as long as the dessert or “cheat meal” is quality.  There is no way I am downing a packaged processed non food item for a “treat meal”…did you catch how I changed that up?  The indulgence would have to be home baked or gourmet, all natural quality ingredients and provide over the top fabulous flavors in my mouth.

Overall, the combination of work in the gym, maintenance with the food, plenty of rest, and balance of life with work and play is what makes up healthy ME.  I do not believe in calorie restriction, over exercising my body to risk physical injury, or overworking myself to unmanageable stress levels.  Life is about being healthy and the work in the gym and maintenance with the food is just a part, but very important part, of the success of living a healthy life, feeling my best, and enjoying the results of living this way.
